I have lived much of my life in San Diego. My favorite place to go there is Balboa Park. This park is in the middle of the city, is huge, well over 100 years old, and wonderful for all ages. Most famous is the San Diego Zoo. And there are actually two San Diego Zoos. The one in Balboa Park and the newer Safari Park Zoo in Escondido about 35 miles north of the downtown Zoo.
Besides the Zoo you have the buildings and amenities made for the 1915-16 opening of the Panama Canal, and the 1935-36 California Pacific International Exposition. There are also art galleries, Natural History Museum, The Museum of Man anthropological museum, El Prado restaurant, large rose garden, golf course, photography museum, model train museum, Air Museum, Auto Museum, International houses of many of the World’s countries, the World’s largest outdoor Organ music theater, Science museum, and one of the World’s largest exotic plant collections. I have left off a lot of other things like the Japanese garden and succulent & cactus gardens, the Old Globe theaters, and a whole lot more. If you are going to San Diego and looking for things to do Balboa Park is in my opinion the best place to start. Oh, we have very nice beaches too.
